ALBANY, N.Y. — New York is set to become the 23rd state to legalize medical marijuana under an agreement announced by legislative leaders Thursday afternoon. The so-called Compassionate Care Act would legalize certain forms of marijuana for severely ill patients. The legislation does not allow the drug to be sold in plant form or smoked, but it can be administered through a vaporizer or in an oil-base.

There’s an unusual sight on U.S. 160 in Pagosa Springs, Colo. — a motel sign proudly exclaiming “420 FRIENDLY” next to the other amenities such as wifi, hot tub and sauna. The First Inn’s sign is not a joke or a Photoshop prank. In fact the soon-to-be-famous sign might be a first in Colorado’s microcosm of legal recreational marijuana: The first street-side admission from a hotel that weed is welcome here.

We’re somewhat stumped here at Cannabist HQ this morning. We’re looking at Legal Hemp’s website, where the company peddles marijuana-flavored candies — lollipops, chocolate bars, jelly beans — that have no THC in them.

The Milken Institute likes to keep up with the newest new thing, so it was no surprise that its April conference in Los Angeles included a panel on investing in marijuana. The moderator, Mike “Zappy” Zapolin, a trainee at Drexel Burnham Lambert when junk-bond king Michael Milken reigned there, spent several minutes talking about Zappy Inc., a company he’s formed to profit from cannabis. Another member of the panel, Craig Ellins, showed an infomercial for the hydroponic pot-growing chambers developed by his new company, GrowBlox Sciences.
